Phu Yen is a Vietnamese province frequently facing many natural disasters, especially big tides and waves of the Central Coast. Climate change consequences are increasingly severe and Phu Yen province is the most affected area.
Although there were policies proposed to minimize the damage of tides and waves, they have been pending, which caused difficulties to daily life, production and settling of locals. As such, in the near future, there are no safeguard measures taken to reduce the effects of tides and waves in the coastal areas of Phu Yen.
M.Sc Nguyen Phu Bao at Phu Yen Green Joint Stock Company has repeatedly witnessed the people of his hometown using sand barrages or rocks to cope with storm surges and ocean waves, but these materials are disjointed, thus themselves broken down and broken by waves easily.
As a professional in the field of environment for 15 years, he saw people in Tra Vinh province plant Vetiver grass to prevent landslides. Then, he observed and saw everywhere the sea spinach are available, the sand is not drifting. And he learned that Bangladesh has spread coco coir to keep the soil from drifting. In other places, they have seen straw covers on the surface of the dike, but straw is able to withstand only within moderate rains on low slopes.
As a result, he decided to combine the Vetiver, sea spinach and coco coir to form a “bio-technology” to prevent tides and sea waves. This is one of the winners of the “Vietnam Innovation Day 2010” organized by the World Bank.
Remarking on the project “Erosion prevention using Vetiver system, sea spinach, and coco coir”, Deputy Director of Phu Yen Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that this is a technical solution adapting to climate change, reducing the risk to humans, very environmentally friendly, suitable with plant biology. In difficult economic conditions, the funding source of Phu Yen is limited. This is an innovative solution that has great significance in protecting the ecological environment and bringing about a sustainable socio-economic effect. If the project is successfully implemented, this solution can be applied and replicated in Phu Yen and the central coastal provinces.”
